Greater London House

Greater London House, originally called the Carreras Building, was built between 1926 and 1928 as a factory making Black Cat cigarettes. The front façade, facing Mornington Crescent tube station, was finely detailed with black cat reliefs and Egyptian columns celebrating the recent discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb.

A 1960s conversion to offices removed all the façade decoration including the two 8’ high black cats that stood guard at the main entrance.

We undertook the complete restoration of the original façade and a thorough renovation of the internal office space. We carefully managed the works to allow the tenants to remain in the building. The project was awarded a Civic Trust Award and a Camden Design Award, and was featured as Building of the Month in the RIBA Journal.
